Zusammenfassung

Die Suche nach zweiwertigen Kohlenstoffverbindungen begann schon, bevor überhaupt der Begriff der Wertigkeit bestimmt war, und zwar mit M. M. J. Dumas und E. Péligot (39), die bereits vor 130 Jahren in der französischen Akademie der Wissenschaften eine „Mémoire sur l’esprit de bois et sur les divers composés ethérés qui en proviennent“ verlasen. Darin definierten sie Methylen als eine Verbindung, die nach der heutigen Schreibweise CH2 ist. Sie sahen die Monosubstitutionsprodukte des Methans als Abkömmlinge des Methylens an, so z. B. Methylalkohol als Verbindung von Methylen mit Wasser, und Methylchlorid als Verbindung von Methylen mit Chlorwasserstoff. Diese Anschauung wurde auch in ihrer Nomenklatur zum Ausdruck gebracht, indem z. B. Methylchlorid Methylenchlorhydrat genannt wurde. Sie stellten fest, daß es ihnen zwar gelang, durch Pyrolyse des Methylchlorids Chlorwasserstoff abzuspalten, es aber nicht möglich war, bei diesem Versuch Methylen zu isolieren.
