Abstract

“Cancer of the cervix is now regarded as a preventable disease” — so ran the statement in one of the publications of WHO (1964); a well known pathologist chimed in by saying: “We see the day ahead when there will be no more invasive carcinoma of the cervix and many of us, we hope, will live to see this day”. These highflying statements, hopes and predictions are based on two assumptions:

  1. I.

Every invasive carcinoma (i. ca.) of the cervix evolves through a preparatory stage called carcinoma in situ (ca.i.s.).

  2. II.

Every ca.i.s., after some duration turns into an i.ca.; this transition can be prevented by recognition and adequate treatment of the ca.i.s.
