Abstract

Since the first well-documented morphological descriptions of nephroblastoma,1,2 which preceded Max Wilms’ landmark monograph “Die Mischgeschwülste der Niere”3 by two decades, information on the morphology of Wilms tumors has accumulated rapidly. Histopathologic studies conducted under the auspices of both the North American National Wilms Tumor Study (NWTS) and the European International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) have resulted in an extensive body of literature concerning the histomorphology of this childhood neoplasm. Traditionally viewed as a triphasic embryonal renal tumor, it is now clear that some Wilms tumors may be biphasic or even monomorphic, causing some differential diagnostic challenges. This chapter intends to provide a basic understanding of some of the histopathologic features of childhood renal tumors, including Wilms tumor.
