Zusammenfassung
Differenzierung einer Zellart bedeutet Sichtbarwerden morphologischer Besonderheiten. Diese Strukturen sind der Ausdruck besonderer funktioneller Fähigkeiten. In der Regel sind die Prozesse, die der Differenzierung zugrunde liegen, kompliziert und verlaufen über zahlreiche Zwischenstufen. Mit den traditionellen Methoden der Morphologie, die optische Zustandsbilder erfassen, läßt sich das dynamische Geschehen, jedenfalls in der Dimension des Lichtmikroskops, nicht vollständig klären. Im Moment des Sichtbarwerdens der Verschiedenheiten sind gewöhnlich die fundamentalen Prozesse im molekularen Größenbereich bereits beendet. Das Geschehen selbst entzieht sich der Analyse durch statische Methoden. Wird im Embryonalkörper zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt an einem definierten Ort eine besondere Zellart nachweisbar, so bedeutet dies nicht, daß diese Zellart am Orte des ersten Sichtbarwerdens entstanden ist. Die Herkunft einer derart differenzierten Zellart kann also grundsätzlich nicht mit deskriptiv anatomischen Methoden aufgedeckt werden (B. Fischer-Wasels 1931). Die Morphologie bedient sich zur Analyse derartiger kausalgenetischer Fragestellungen des Experimentes. Die Methoden der Gewebekultur, der Ausschaltung und der Transplantation sind im cytologischen Bereich nicht zu umgehen, wenn genetische Fragen geklärt werden sollen.
