Zusammenfassung
Seit alters her werden die Meere genutzt, zuerst im Küstenbereich und später auch die offene See. Neben den klassischen Nutzungsarten Fischerei und Schiffahrt expandierte in diesem Jahrhundert auch die bergbauliche Nutzung (z. B. Erdgas- und Erdölförderung), die sich jahrtausendelang auf die Salzgewinnung in Küstenbereichen beschränkt hatte. Zu diesen „entnehmenden“Nutzungsarten kommt noch die teils absichtliche, teils unbeabsichtigte Nutzung des Meeres als Deponie für Abfälle und Schadstoffe. Von einer immer größer werdenden Menschheit, deren Siedlungsschwerpunkte sich immer stärker an die Küsten verlagern (derzeit 70% der Weltbevölkerung) und deren wirtschaftliche Aktivität immer weiter zunimmt, geht ein zunehmender Nutzungs- und Belastungsdruck auf die Meeres aus, dessen Folgen an den Ökosystemen der Küsten und der Randmeere bereits deutlich zu erkennen sind.
