Abstract

This article consists of the talk given by the author to the Congress, but together with various extensions. It is certainly in the area claimed by the title, focusing on connections between recursive functions and groups. Some results are stated and a reference given as to where the proofs may be found, some results are stated and the proofs promised as forthcoming, a weakened form of one of the latter is proved in outline here, but otherwise the article consists of a wild array of obiter dicta, questions, and speculations.
