Abstract

Substances used to color materials (pigments and dyes) are called colorants. Dyes are soluble substances, or substances that are soluble during a stage of a dyeing process. They are commonly used to color textiles, paper, plastics, leather, etc. Certain classes of dyes are rendered insoluble by a chemical process after they have penetrated into the material being dyed. Figments are insoluble substances particles of which are dispersed in paints, lacquers, inks, paper, plastics, rubber, etc. Fluorescent pigments for paints are commonly dyes dissolved in a plastic. The dye and plastic ingredients are combined before the plastic is transformed chemically into an insoluble solid and ground to a powder.
