Abstract

Examining the requirements, supply and production of water by desalination, Othmer reminds that fresh water is most unevenly divided throughout the world. More research and development funds are being spent worldwide to develop desalination technology, than for almost any other nonmilitary purpose except space. The development of many countries will advance rapidly when water will be made available. The less developed countries will be the beneficiaries of desalination research. The highly industrialized countries have an additional problem, namely pollution from the concentration of population and industries [1].
