Surgical Pathology of the Anal Canal: A Review of Recent Literature on Anatomy and Pathology

  • Chapter

Abstract

The major part of the literature on the anal canal deals with the treatment of the characteristic malignant tumors in this area, and new insights into the pathogenesis of hemorrhoids. New information has also appeared concerning the embryology, anatomy, and histology. The number of pathologic conditions diagnosed in the anal canal is still increasing. This brief summary will provide an overview of recent observations.
