Abstract

Many studies on algal cells are straightforward investigations of the general cytology and ultrastructure of a particular species or group of species. The results may merely confirm that the alga is a good member of its order, with typical organelles and organisation. Even so, these basic morphological investigations are now demonstrating their value in an increasing number of comparative studies with important implications for taxonomy, phylogeny, cell function and development. Comparative use of information on ultrastructure is, for example, considered below with respect to relationships in the green algae and the phylogeny of higher plants (8. Phylogeny). Other studies are specifically concerned with special structures, development, reproduction, division, life cycles, parasitism and symbiosis. The present article is an attempt to indicate points of interest from some of these studies and to summarise the main areas of progress during the past year. Three recently published books are relevant to this: one, an account by DODGE (2) of the fine structure of algal cells, serves usefully as a survey of the subject up to 1972; the others, complementary texts on the blue-green algae (CARR and WHITTON; FOGG et al.), both contain chapters summarising present knowledge on cellular organisation in this group.
