Abstract
Our understanding of living systems proceeds along three main lines: firstly elucidation of the basic molecular mechanisms of living processes, secondly investigation of control processes within single cells and between cells of a single individuum or cell complex, and thirdly study of the interactions between living organisms and their environment. Knowledge of the basic molecular mechanisms has reached a point where the synthesis of genes in vitro has become possible (KHORANA et al.; KHORANA and AGARWAL). On the other hand, our understanding of the interactions between living organisms and their environment is still very rudimentary; main research efforts under the titles “ecology”, “behaviour” and “sociology” will be necessary in the near future to further investigate these aspects.
