Résumé
En commençant le présent exposé, il n’est pas inutile de se demander dans quelle mesure il peut être justifié de traiter de l’endocrinologie foetale comme s’il s’agissait d’un chapitre particulier de l’endocrinologie. L’analyse de l’endocrinologie foetale aurait une utilité pratique évidente, s’il était démontré que les glandes endocrines jouent un rôle crucial et indispensable dans le développement normal du foetus ou si des endocrinopathies foetales pouvaient laisser des séquelles irrémédiables dans l’organisme adulte. Bien que beaucoup de recherches soient encore nécessaires, il paraît bien en être ainsi. La naissance n’est pas l’évènement le plus important dans l’évolution des glandes endocrines, il semble même que certaines glandes aient déjà terminé leur rôle physiologique fondamental dans l’endocrinologie foetale, bien avant le terme, et qu’elles puissent passer par un stade de relative inactivité durant la fin de la grossesse. Le degré de maturité du nouveau-né est extrêmement variable (que l’on songe au petit du cobaye et à celui du rat, par exemple), et la naissance n’est pas un point de repère très utile dans la comparaison des évènements physiologiques importants se passant dans l’organisme foetal: la régression des canaux de Müller du mâle, qui marque le début d’une activité endocrine importante du testicule a lieu environ 4 jours avant le terme chez le rat et 7 mois avant chez l’Homme.
