Part of the book series: Palaeontologia Cathayana ((PALAEONTOLOGIA,volume 5))

Abstract

In this paper are discussed 61 species and 48 genera, belonging to Polyplacophora, Merismoconchia, Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Rostroconchia, with emphasis laid on their first radiation. All the species and genera were discovered from the Meishucun Stage in the Yangtze Region of China and thus are called the Yangtze Micromolluscan Fauna. There is a probability of a close evolutionary relationship among the Polyplacophora, Merismoconchia and Monoplacophora. In the Cambrian, gastropods underwent two developmental stages. Morphologically, they changed from simple to complicated in shell. The Bivalvia first appeared in the Earliest Cambrian. As headless molluscs, they are also called “Acephala” and can not be regarded as advanced molluscs.
