Abstract

The Devonian rocks in Hunan are distributed in the shallow sea basin extending from SW to NE. The Jiangnan Oldland, trending NE-SW, separated the basin into northwestern Hunan and central Hunan. Based on the differences of lithology and fossil content, the Devonian of Hunan may be distinguished into the littoral facies including the outer littoral facies and the inner littoral facies, and the shallow marine facies, which can be further differentiated into the reef platformal facies zone and the inter-reef depressional facies zone.

The framework of subdivision of Devonian in each facies is outlined, with a special discussion on the lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic characters of the Chitzechiao Formation and the Shetienchiao Formation and their correlatives, and the biostratigraphic characters of the Hsikuangshan Formation. Some remarks are made on the age of the Shaotung Formation and the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in Hunan.

The Devonian paleogeography of Hunan is discussed with special emphasis on the development of Devonian reef complex, which can be generalized into 4 phases, ranging from the late Middle Devonian to the end of the Late Devonian Frasnian stage.

Two kinds of ore deposit associations can be recognized. The iron deposit of Ningxiang type is known to occur mostly in the transitional terrain between the outer and inner littoral facies zones. The siderite and its sister ore deposits have been proved to occur mostly at the transitional terrain between the reef platformal facies zone and the inter-reef depressional facies zone in the shallow marine facies. It is for the first time to point out that the Devonian paleogeography and reef complex are the main controlling factors and genetic mechanisms affecting the distributional pattern of the iron ore deposits of the Ningxiang type and also the formation of the siderite and its sister ore deposits in Hunan.
