Because trauma is responsible for peripheral nerve injuries requiring operative treatment, it is understandable that times of war have produced most of the knowledge upon which the principies of peripheral nerve surgery is based. Experience gained during two world wars in the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries still guides the handling of injured nerves.
