Abstract
Since Brown and Roshko [5.3] pointed out that coherent structures are intrinsic features of a free shear layer, their investigation has become the mainstream of shear-turbulence research. The pairing of these structures [5.4, 5.5] was proved to be responsible for the spreading and the momentum transfer in a mixing layer. Therefore, if the evolution of these coherent structures can be well described, the dynamics of the shear layer can be understood.
