Design for automation: the total business approach

  • Conference paper
New Frontiers in Manufacturing

Abstract

Design for Automation is the same theme as Design for Manufacture for most of our small to medium size factories. It is a theme that cuts across organisational boundaries and impinges on the “Total Business” — marketing, engineering and manufacturing. This paper explores Design for Automation in the context of the “Total Business”, discusses the rules for implementation and the pitfalls to be avoided. Remarkable similarities are seen between all sectors of industry, be they predominantly electrical or mechanical.
