The future use of robots in shipbuilding

  • Conference paper

Abstract

This paper attempts to illustrate the future use of robots in shipbuilding, based on some four years of robotic work at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders, as well as on current R and D programmes and experiences from shipyards worldwide. The F.A.S.T. concept (Flexible Automation in Shipbuilding Technology), is also introduced.

It is concluded that more and more robotic workcells will find their way into shipbuilding. The use of lasers, large gantries, small portable and autonomously travelling robots will dominate the future shipyard. By the earl ‘80s a number of ’islands of flexible and C.I.M. Sub-Systems will start being created for certain areas within the ship production process. The concept of the automated shipyard, however seems a very long way away, if it will be at all attainable with conventional ship designs, and build philosophies.
