Abstract
For many years now the caudal neurosecretory system and its neurohemal organ in teleosts, the urophysis, have been the subject of intensive morphological investigation. Although many of the more recent studies have been functionally oriented, the nature of the urophysial hormone(s) and their actual physiological role remain incompletely understood (cf. Bern, 1969, 1971, 1972; Lederis, 1970, 1971, 1972; Lederis et al., 1971; Chan, 1971; Berlind, 1973). At present, substantial data point to the existence of a number of urophysial principles or urotensins. Urotensins I and II have been extensively studied pharmacologically. Urotensin II appears to have a general smooth muscle-contracting effect including a hypertensive influence in fish, as well as bladder-contracting (Lederis, 1970a, b; Berlind, 1972a), lymph heart-stimulating (Chan, 1971) and sperm duct-contracting (Berlind, 1972b) activities. An association of the caudal system with reproduction continues to appear from time to time in the literature (Dixit, 1971).
