Abstract
Meiosis is a specialized form of nuclear division which ordinarily results in a reduction of chromosome number from the diploid to the haploid value. August Weissman (1887) pointed out that regular biparental inheritance in which each parent makes an equal contribution to heredity “depends upon the removal of half of the germ-plasma (nuclear substance)... in both male germ cells as well as in female ones...” prior to fertilization. Cytological, genetic, and biochemical approaches have been taken in a variety of systems to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the process so central to sexually reproducing eukaryotes.
