Abstract

Alcohols are a class of organic compounds containing one or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) attached to a carbon atom that exists in one of four configurations:

  1. 1.

    Attached to no other carbon atom, i.e., methanol.

  2. 2.

    Bonded to one other carbon atom, a primary alcohol.

  3. 3.

    Bonded to two other carbon atoms, a secondary alcohol.

  4. 4.

    Bonded to three carbon atoms, tertiary alcohols, such as tert-amyl alcohol.
