Abstract

Catalysts change the rate of a chemical reaction without being chemically altered, although they may undergo physical change. They are used extensively in almost all industrial processes (e.g., chemical synthesis, petroleum refining, emission control) to increase reaction speed and efficiency. Metal catalysts are the most important commercially although catalysts may be organic, inorganic, or organometallic. They may have any physical form, although gases are rare.
