Nutritional Aspects in Children on CAPD

  • Chapter
Frontiers in Peritoneal Dialysis

Summary

Eight children on CAPD and nine treated by hemodialysis were surveyed with regard to nutritional intake and were studied by IV glucose tolerance test. Children on CAPD adapt to the glucose absorption from dialysis fluid by spontaneously decreasing their carbohydrate intake in favor of fats. The energy intake is maintained, but the spontaneous protein intake is low. Protein losses into dialysate averaged 10% of protein intake. The diet should be modified to provide a high protein intake and should be monitored.
