Summary
The experimental and clinical origins of peritoneal dialysis have been reviewed. Shortly after World War II understanding of acute renal failure, of fluid and electrolyte balance and dialysis reached a level that encouraged clinical application of peritoneal dialysis. This achieved the first survival attributed to control by peritoneal dialysis of the effects of acute renal failure. Subsequent developments in the dialysis procedure have been reviewed.
