Quantum Theory of a Laser

  • Chapter
Elements of Quantum Optics

Abstract

This is the last chapter of this book, and the third that applies the quantum theory of the interaction of radiation with matter developed in Chaps. 12–14. So far, our treatment of quantized field-matter interactions has concentrated mostly on situations where the quantized field acts as a noise source: under these conditions the nonlinear atomic response originates from a classical driving field, while the effects of the quantized modes are treated linearly. A notable exception was the Jaynes-Cummings model, where the Hamiltonian can be diagonalized exactly and hence the quantized mode is treated to all orders.
