Zusammenfassung

Die Geschichte der Entwicklung der Anaesthesie ist, wie die vieler anderer nützlicher Beiträge zur Zivilisation, reich an Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen, an Erfolgen und Fehlschlägen, an tragischen, aber auch an heiteren Geschehnissen. Die Erbitterung, in der Kontroverse um die Einführung der Äthernarkose und des Lachgases, wirkt noch ein Jahrhundert später nach. Diese Auseinandersetzung ist enttäuschend, da sie das Fehlen eines historischen Gesichtspunkts vermuten lassen, wie dies im Streit um Prioritäten so häufig ist.
