Die Vielfalt der Insulinpräparate, die heute in Deutschland erhältlich sind, erlaubt Leine exakte, der individuellen Stoffwechselsituation des Patienten angepaßte Insulinsubstitution. Eine erfolgreiche Insulinbehandlung verlangt vom behandelnden Arzt sehr viel Erfahrung, die wegen der Seltenheit des Typ-I-Diabetes bei Kindern und Jugendlichen schwierig zu erlangen ist. Experte wird nur, wer über Jahre zahlreiche Typ-I-Diabetiker langfristig behandelt und betreut.
