Abstract

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Japanese youth is its diligence and obedience. American scientists have especially praised the secondary qualifications of Japanese students, which have prepared them to become a highly motivated and well integrated workforce. Yet in the 1990s the efficiency of the Japanese educational system with regard to the social integration of youth has been profoundly questioned. The problem has been described by the term of gakkyû hôkai (disruption of classrooms), indicating the breakdown of discipline in Japanese schools, the end of school culture and loss of control on the side of adults.
