Therapeutic Criteria in Hydrocephalic Children

  • Chapter
Annual Review of Hydrocephalus

Abstract

In treating infantile hydrocephalus it is frequently necessary to decide whether it is better to implant a shunt or to wait for spontaneous improvement. There are presently no universally accepted criteria on which to base this decision. Recently, we proposed that the xanthine, hypoxanthine, and total oxypurine levels in CSF can be used in cases of hydrocephalus as guides for thereapeutic action and monitor its progress.
