Abstract
The state of inorganic chemistry during the latter half of the nineteenth century was undistinguished, compared to that of organic chemistry. Only a few individual figures stood out clearly, notably Moissan, Ramsay, and Werner — in sharp contrast to the many top rank organic chemists. Along stalemate had resulted from excessive dependence on organic structural concepts. Not until the end of the century, as a consequence of Werner’s work, did inorganic structural chemistry take a profitable direction [45].
