Chromosome Instability in Bread Wheat (Triticum aestivum) Cell Suspensions and their Dividing Protoplasts
The development of efficient regeneration systems in the cereals is a key factor in the establishment of techniques aimed at direct manipulation of the cereal genome (Jones 1985). Regeneration has been achieved from cultured explants, particularly immature embryos and inflorescences, in a wide range of species (Maddock 1985; Tomes 1985). However, despite considerable effort, it is not yet possible to regenerate whole plants routinely from cultured protoplasts of wheat (Triticum aestivum). This severely limits the choice of strategies for novel gene transfer by transformation and precludes protoplast fusion as a means of producing somatic hybrid plants.
