Abstract

One of the waveguide NLO devices of practical importance is difference-frequency generation (DFG) devices, where optical waves of two different frequencies are mixed to generate an optical wave of another frequency corresponding to the difference of the two frequencies. They offer means of generating coherent radiation at wavelengths where no appropriate laser is available, and converting an optical signal at a wavelength to that at another wavelength. In principle, difference-frequency waves in an extremely wide wavelength range, from near infrared through mid infrared to terahertz (THz) waves, can be generated, although special device design is required for generation of difference-frequency waves of wavelengths outside the transparency range of the crystal. Potential applications of the generated coherent waves include various sensing, measurements, and imaging in a specific spectral range for environmental and biomedical studies and industrial process control.
