Zusammenfassung
Die in den beiden vorhergehenden Kapiteln besprochene innere Brutpflege der Wirbeltiere stellt die am weitesten abgeleitete und spezialisierte Weise der Chancenerhöhung für das Überleben der Nachkommenschaft dar. In der überwiegenden Mehrheit aller Fälle ist die innere Brutpflege „passiv“, d.h. der tragende Elternteil schützt die Nachkommenschaft im eigenen Körper und ver- und entsorgt ihn durch seinen Metabolismus, ohne daß weitere spezifische Aktivitäten notwendig sind. Bei der äußeren Brutpflege ist dies jedoch immer der Fall: es müssen z.B. Nester zur Aufnahme von Gelegen bzw. der Jungen gebaut werden, die Brut muß bewacht und gegebenenfalls verteidigt werden, die Intensität der Futtersuche erhöht sich über den eigenen Bedarf hinaus um das zur zusätzlichen Ernährung der Jungen notwendige Maß, und in vielen Fällen werden die Jungtiere mit spezifischen Umweltsituationen vertraut gemacht. Hierzu ergibt sich ein sehr vielschichtiges Phänomen, welches allerdings innerhalb der brutpflegenden Vertebraten in sehr unterschiedlichen Komplexitätsgraden verwirklicht ist.
