Zusammenfassung
Normalerweise sind die Wirbeltiere zum Zeitpunkt des Schlüpfens aus dem Ei bzw. der Geburt noch nicht fortpflanzungsfähig. Sie durchlaufen vielmehr in der Regel zuerst eine Wachstumsphase, gegen deren Ende dann die Gonaden funktionsfähig werden und sich parallel hierzu auch sekundäre Geschlechtsmerkmale ausbilden. Man nennt den Gesamtprozeß vom Beginn der Gonadenreifung bis zum reproduktionsfähigen Adultus „Pubertas“ oder „Pubertät“. Dieser Terminus bezeichnet nicht nur die Ausbildung funktionsfähiger Gonaden und damit die Geschlechtsreife, sondern den gesamten Übergang von der Wachstumsphase in die Reproduktionsphase des Lebens. Bei Haustieren teilt man daher die Pubertät in zwei Abschnitte ein: den Zeitraum der Geschlechtsreife und den Zeitpunkt der „Zuchtreife“. So erreichen z.B. Pferde bereits im Alter von 15 bis 18 Monaten die Geschlechtsreife; die erste Reproduktion findet aber erst im Stadium der Zuchtreife im Alter von 36 bis 60 Monaten statt. In vielen Fällen ist der Übergang zum adulten Tier mit der Funktionsfähigkeit der Gonaden noch nicht abgeschlossen, und es schließt sich noch eine Weiterentwicklung des Organismus bis zur vollen Reproduktionsfähigkeit an. Bei Arten mit kurzer Gesamtlebensdauer ist der Zeitraum der Pubertät in der Regel sehr kurz, und mit der Funktionsfähigkeit der Gonaden ist meist auch die weitere körperliche Reproduktionsfähigkeit erreicht; bei langlebigen Arten hat dieser Gesamtprozeß einen höheren Zeitbedarf.
