Tunable Paramagnetic-Ion Solid-State Lasers

  • Chapter
Tunable Lasers

Part of the book series: Topics in Applied Physics ((TAP,volume 59))

Abstract

Tunable paramagnetic ion lasers, particularly those based on transition metals, offer the potential for high energy storage and high pulse output power. This potential derives from the low oscillator strength of their laser emission bands and the consequent slow rate of spontaneous emission. It also derives from the fact that the host crystals are often hard, durable gemstones with high thermal conductivity. Thus, some broadly tunable paramagnetic ion lasers offer the pulse energy and power of the traditional fixed wavelength, lamp-pumped, solid-state lasers, such as Nd: YAG and ruby.
