Abstract
Distributed feedback (DFB) was first incorporated in dye lasers in 1971 (Kogelnik and Shank, 1971; Shank et al., 1971; Kaminow et al., 1971), in solid-state lasers in 1973 (Nakamura et al., 1973) and in gas lasers in 1979 (Affolter and KneubUhl, 1979, 1981; KneubUhl and Affolter, 1982). DFB lasers do not include conventional resonator mirrors for the feedback of the radiation. In these lasers the feedback is provided via Bragg scattering from periodic variations of the refractive index or/and of the gain of the laser medium. This is a feedback mechanism distributed over the whole length of the periodic structures. Another important feature of DFB is high spectral selectivity, which originates in the Bragg effect. This allows selection of longitudinal modes even for broad gain profiles of the laser medium.
