Luigi Galvani, Anatom an der Universität Bologna, beobachtete 1789 wie ein enthäutetes Froschbein, das mit einem Kupferhaken nahe dem Balkongeländer aufgehängt war, jedes Mal zusammenzuckte, wenn das Bein mit dem Eisengeländer in Berührung kam.
