Zusammenfassung
In Deutschland ereignen sich jährlich über 2,2 Mio. Verkehrsunfälle. 1995 wurden mehr als 520 000 Unfallopfer verletzt, davon 122 000 schwer. Die geschätzten Kosten für die Personenschäden betrugen ca. 27 Mrd. DM. Die Folgen von schweren Verkehrsunfällen gehen über ökonomische oder physische Schädigung weit hinaus. Die psychischen Beeinträchtigungen wurden in der Forschung nur wenig untersucht. Nach den bisherigen Studien zu psychischen Folgen von Verkehrsunfällen ist mit Beeinträchtigungen wie

posttraumatischen Belastungsstörungen,
-
phobischem Vermeidungsverhalten (v a. phobische Reiseängste),
-
anderen Angststörungen,
-
Depressionen und
-
organische Psychosyndromen
in einer Häufigkeit von 20–30 % der Opfer zu rechnen (Malt, 1988).
