Abstract
FOR very small animals endothermy is an extravagantly costly way of remaining instantly ready for rapid locomotion. Always being prepared for making a quick getaway from a predator uses a lot of energy. Heliothermy also has obvious disadvantages for predator avoidance, because the presence of sunshine is locally unreliable, and when the animal does bask it is exposed to potentially hungry visual scanners; furthermore, once a very small animal moves, convection almost instantly cools it again.
