Abstract
Collin (1906) first reported the occurrence of degenerating cells in the ventral horn of the chick embryo spinal cord. Cellular degeneration was then observed repeatedly also in other sites of the developing nervous system including the spinal ganglia, and some authors pointed out the role of this phenomenon in morphogenesis (see Glücksmann, 1951 and Saunders, 1966 for a review). A brief list of the authors who studied with the light microscope degenerative events in developing spinal ganglia and the zoological species used are reported in Table 1.
