Abstract

When the interatomic potential is attractive a chain of a finite number of particles can exist in a stable state. Then we can study both the ground state and the dynamics of such a finite-length chain of a fixed number of particles. This kind of problem has applications in surface diffusion and the physics of atom clusters. This short chapter is devoted to some of these problems.
