Ileoanal Anastomosis

  • Pierre Mathey

Up to 1980, permanent ileostomies were an unfortunate but necessary consequence of the surgical treatment of large-bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis (UC) or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Such stomas have been shown to be compatible with a healthy and productive life-style, but are also associated with significant psychological and physical morbidity and disability in often very young patients. It was natural, therefore, that surgeons should seek a solution that would offer the same safe treatment but also provide more comfort.
