Abstract

Extensive studies have been concentrated on the development of solid state micropower sources for a variety applications from batteries to miniature electronic devices. ldentificaion of a good solid electrolyte with excellent electrical properties and a compatible electrochemical couple is of paramount importance. This review describes the current status of solid electrolytes studied in thin film form and their applications. Emphasis is made on vitreous lithium based fast ion conductors, and examples from the investigations carried out in the recent past have been discussed in detail. Different preparation techniques currently used in the fabrication of microcells have also been briefed.
