Zusammenfassung

Der Begriff „Fibromyalgie“ (FMA) geht auf eine Veröffentlichung der American Rheumatism Association (ARA) im Jahre 1976 zurück. Es sollte deskriptiv verstanden werden als Hinweis auf eine Störung, die durch Schmerzen am straffen Bindegewebe und an der Muskulatur gekennzeichnet ist. Es ist, auch wegen seines beschreibenden Charakters, anderen und als Synonyma gebräuchlichen Bezeichnungen wie „Fibrositis“, „generalisierte Tendomyopathie“ (Müller 1976) oder „syndrome polyalgique idiopathique diffus“ (Houvenagel 1994) vorzuziehen.
