Zusammenfassung

Bei näherer Beschäftigung mit dem Phänomen Schmerz wird man schnell mit einem Paradoxon konfrontiert. Betrachtet man den Schmerz unter einem phylogenetischen Blickwinkel, so ist die Sensitivität für noxische Reize ein sicher „uraltes“ und vielen Organismen gemeinsames Merkmal; ontogenetisch betrachtet gehört Schmerz zu den frühesten und häufigsten Erfahrungen eines jeden Individuums. Danach wäre zu erwarten, daß auch der wissenschaftliche Umgang mit Schmerz eine lange Tradition hat und die wesentlichsten Fragen beantwortet sind. Dies ist jedoch nicht der Fall. Befaßt man sich mit der Wissenschaft vom Schmerz, sieht man sich mit sehr unterschiedlichen Auffassungen und Theorien, offen zu Tage liegenden Widersprüchlichkeiten und ungelösten Fragen konfrontiert. So ist es letztendlich nicht verwunderlich, daß Melzack noch 1973 seinem Buch den Titel gab The puzzle of pain (Das Rätsel Schmerz).
