Zusammenfassung
Die Großhirnrinde ist eine dünne, vielfach gefaltete Schicht neuronalen Gewebes, deren Oberfläche etwa 2200 cm2 beträgt (das entspricht einem Quadrat von 47 cm × 47 cm) und deren Dicke in den verschiedenen Hirnabschnitten zwischen 1,3 und 4,5 mm schwankt. Ihr Volumen liegt bei 600 cm3. Sie enthält 10 9 bis 10 10 Neurone und eine große, aber unbekannte Zahl von Gliazellen [6, 18, 44]. In der Rinde wechseln sich Schichten, die vorwiegend Zellkörper enthalten, mit solchen ab, in denen vorwiegend Axone verlaufen, so daß die frisch angeschnittene Rinde ein streifiges Aussehen zeigt. Typischerweise werden aufgrund der Zellformen und ihrer Anordnungen 6 Schichten unterschieden, wobei manche in zwei und mehr Unterschichten aufgeteilt werden (Abb. 7-1, 7-3).
