Zusammenfassung
Homoiothermie. Poikilothermie. Der in Kap. 24 beschriebene Energieumsatz geht nach den Gesetzen der Thermodynamik mit Wärmebildung einher. Während bei der Behandlung des Energieumsatzes diese Wärme als Nebenprodukt angesehen wird, rückt sie in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung, wenn man das unterschiedliche Verhalten der Körpertemperatur im Tierreich untersucht. Bei einer Gruppe von Lebewesen, zu der auch der Mensch gehört, wird die Körpertemperatur infolge hoher Wärmebildung (Tachymetabolismus) und zusätzlicher Regelungsmechanismen auf einem Wert, der erheblich über der Umgebungstemperatur liegt, konstant gehalten (homoiotherme Lebewesen). Bei einer zweiten Gruppe, zu der z.B. Fische und Reptilien gehören, ist die Wärmebildung weit geringer (bradymetabolische Organismen): die Körpertemperatur liegt demgemäß nur wenig über der Umgebungstemperatur und folgt deren Schwankungen (poikilotherme Lebewesen).
