Zusammenfassung
Wenn das physiologische Zusammenspiel von protektiven und aggressiven Faktoren im Magen gestört ist, kann daraus ein Geschwür (Ulkus) entstehen. Erhält die aggressive Seite ein starkes Übergewicht, resultiert ein schweres Krankheitsbild. Dies wurde besonders bei zwei Patienten deutlich, die Zollinger und Ellison 1955 beschrieben: die Patienten litten an exzessiven Magengeschwüren, die sich teilweise bis in das Jejunum erstreckten, zahlreiche operative Eingriffe erforderlich machten und schließlich zu einer Magenentfernung führten. Bei den Operationen entdeckte man einen Tumor des Pankreas, der das Hormon Gastrin produzierte. Die unregulierte, überschießende Produktion dieses Hormons,das die Magensekretion (mit-)steuert, führte bei den Patienten zu einer massiven Überproduktion von saurem Magensaft, welche die Ulzera verursachte.
