Cover Sequences and Near-Trench Igneous Rocks

Abstract

Sedimentary sequences that overlie, or cover, the accreted turbidite sediments occur as two probably gradational suites: hemipelagic sediments and clastic basin fill. The hemipelagic cover is composed of varicolored to black shale that is distinctively younger than any of the nearby turbiditic sediments. These sequences are also typically less deformed than the accreted sequences. In contrast, the clastic sedimentary sequences are much coarsergrained and often more regionally extensive than the hemipelagic sequences. The clastic cover sequences also typically occur as basinfill sequences. One of the best examples of a clastic cover sequences is the Misaki Group in Kochi Prefecture (Katto and Taira, 1979) and the Lower Miocene sequence in the Kii Peninsula, Honshu.
