Schistosomes: Surface, Egg and Circulating Antigens

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 120))

Abstract

Schistosomes or blood flukes are macroscopic multicellular organisms which live in the vascular system of vertebrates. Several species are medically important parasites of man in tropical, developing countries where infection is transmitted by freshwater snails. The free-swimming cercarial stage of the parasite shed by the snails is able to penetrate host skin directly. After 3–4 days in the dermis, the young schistosomes or schistosomula begin their intravascular migration through the lungs to the hepatic portal system, where they eventually mature and come to live in the small mesenteric or pelvic veins. A mature female worm will deposit upwards of 100 eggs/day into the blood stream and it is the host’s immune granulomatous reaction to eggs lodged in the tissues which is largely responsible for the chronic, debilitating, and often fatal disease.
